BESS Ground Investigation Yorkshire | Geotechnical Case Study

Supporting the Energy Transition with Specialist BESS Ground Investigation

Key GeoSolutions delivered a complex three week ground investigation in Yorkshire to support the development of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on an undeveloped, historically mined site. The project highlighted the critical role of robust geotechnical investigation, experienced site supervision, and clear ground interpretation when managing renewable energy infrastructure in difficult ground and winter conditions.

Managing Ground Risk on a Coalfield Site

Desktop studies identified historical coal mining beneath the proposed BESS development, requiring regulatory compliance and careful planning prior to intrusive works. A permit to dig was secured from the Coal Authority, ensuring all ground investigation activities met requirements for working on coalfield land.

Site operations presented multiple technical and environmental challenges, including steep sloping terrain, freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall, rising groundwater, and thaw related access constraints. Despite sub zero conditions and equipment limitations, Key GeoSolutions maintained safe and coordinated management of multiple subcontractors, ensuring programme continuity without compromising safety or data quality.

Comprehensive Intrusive Ground Investigation

The ground investigation programme included 22 exploratory locations designed to fully characterise ground conditions for the proposed BESS infrastructure. Techniques included rotary drilling, cable percussion drilling, windowless sampling, and machine excavated trial pits, all logged in accordance with BS 5930:2015. Geotechnical and environmental sampling, alongside in situ SPT testing, provided detailed insight into soil and rock behaviour across the site.

Developing a Robust Ground Model for BESS Design

Investigation findings were compiled into a detailed Interpretive Ground Investigation Report (GIR), including a conceptual ground model, assigned geotechnical parameters, contamination risk assessment, and foundation design recommendations tailored to BESS infrastructure. This provided the client with clear, actionable data to support design, planning, and risk management decisions.

Delivering Reliable Geotechnical Insight for Renewable Energy Projects

Delivering ground investigations for BESS and energy infrastructure in adverse conditions requires technical expertise, adaptability, and strong site leadership. This project demonstrates Key GeoSolutions’ capability to manage complex ground risks and deliver accurate, compliant geotechnical data to support safe, efficient renewable energy development.
